Are Vaccines Safe for Dogs and Cats?
Pet vaccines are one of the most common and important parts of veterinary care, but it’s completely normal to have questions about safety. Many pet owners worry about side effects, over-vaccination, or whether vaccines are truly necessary.
The good news is that vaccines are very well studied and are considered safe for the vast majority of dogs and cats. At Cali’s Cottage, we take a thoughtful, individualized approach to make sure your pet receives only what they need, in a way that feels comfortable for both of you.
What to Expect After Vaccination
Most pets tolerate vaccines very well. The most common reactions are mild and short-lived.
You may notice your pet is a little more tired than usual, slightly sore at the injection site, or less interested in food for the rest of the day. These mild reactions typically resolve within 24 hours and are simply a sign that the immune system is responding.
When to Be Concerned
Serious reactions are rare, but it’s important to know what to watch for.
Signs that should be evaluated include persistent vomiting, facial swelling, hives, difficulty breathing, or significant lethargy that lasts beyond a day. If anything feels off or concerning, it’s always best to reach out. We would much rather talk through something early than have you worry at home.
Do Vaccines Cause Long-Term Problems?
This is one of the most common concerns we hear. In general, vaccines do not cause long-term health problems in dogs or cats.
There has been discussion around rare reactions in certain pets, but these are uncommon. The risk of serious illness from preventable diseases is significantly higher than the risk of a severe vaccine reaction.
That said, we do not take a one-size-fits-all approach. If your pet has had a previous reaction or has specific health concerns, we adjust the plan accordingly.
How We Approach Vaccine Safety at Cali’s Cottage
We focus on making vaccines as safe and appropriate as possible by tailoring recommendations to each individual pet.
We consider your pet’s age, lifestyle, previous vaccine history, and overall health before making any recommendations. Our goal is to provide protection without unnecessary treatments, while keeping the experience calm and low-stress.
Avoiding Over-Vaccination
One of the biggest misconceptions is that pets need every vaccine every year. That is not the case.
Some vaccines provide protection for multiple years, and others are only recommended based on lifestyle and risk. We build vaccine plans that reflect your pet’s real-world exposure, not a generic schedule.
If you’re unsure what your pet actually needs, we walk through it with you and make sure everything makes sense.
